Things that cause a faulty ECU

Generally Ecu failure is caused by a number of other possible car problems, some of these may apply, and we recommend that you always check for the most common failures, as if you do not repair your car properly you will only damage another ECU and that will void any warranty offered.

Water damage – Many modern car manufacturers place ECU’s inside the engine bay and a common problem is water travelling down the loom and flooding the electrical board, causing the ECU to short circuit. Generally ECU’s with water damage are beyond repair as corrosion sets in quickly.

Coils – One of the major causes of ECU failure are faulty Coil packs on cars. These need to be replaced before fitment of a replacement ECU or repeat failure will happen. Car misfiring are a common sign of this issue.

Injectors – Again, with coils faulty injectors can spike/blow an ECU and these also will have to be replaced before refitting any replacement ECU

Wiring – Common wiring, short circuiting and Earthing problems again can spike and burn out an ECU in some cases, always best to have this checked by a qualified electrician.

Immobiliser issues – most ECU’s can be unlocked in this case, the immo ring is usually an external part connected to the ECU and this may have to be replaced.
